A place where panoramic views are part of daily life, and the home is as impressive as the landscape that surrounds it.

Kiwi families around the motu might have long debates about which are the best beaches in Aotearoa New Zealand but for those who have been to the East Coast of the North Island, they would vote the Māhia Peninsula number one, hands down.

“I call it the ultimate beach destination,” says NZ Sotheby’s International Realty sales associate Jacqui Taylor, who explains that the beauty of the Māhia Peninsula is its island style geography.

“If you’re at Māhia and the weather’s windy, then you just go over to the other side and it’ll be a beautiful day,” she says.

“It’s not like you’ve got one beach, there’s Te Māhia with beautiful rock reefs, then you’ve got multiple surfing beaches. And boat launching is at both Whangewehi and Māhia Beach.

This coastal hotspot is also a fishing and diving haven for locals and holiday makers and has a nine-hole golf course.

What a vista

A home for entertaining friends and family

Having secured their extraordinary 12, 866 sqm site, the vendors of this contemporary designer home at 6A Seaview Drive, Mahia,  an hour south of Gisborne and two hours’ north of Napier, were intent on creating a quality dwelling when they built in 2020.

They enlisted the help of local architectural designer Anthony Steel for their stunning three bedroom, two bathroom, 337 sq m home with panoramic ocean views and phenomenal sunsets.

“This is no beach house,” says Jacqui. “This is a residence for all year round living.”

The heart of the home is a true entertainer’s delight - a chef’s kitchen with central island, dual sinks, butler’s pantry and premium appliances.

The kitchen has been designed for regular entertaining – with a central island, dual sinks, butler’s pantry and upscale appliances. And for the home chef, the established grounds include an orchard and raised vegetable beds.

With air-conditioning and a wood burning fire, this is a home that is equally well designed for winter and summer. Some special spots in this elevated house include the library which has its own gas fireplace and built-in ladder to peruse books. There’s also a courtyard at the rear of the property with Louvretec roof above and its own outdoor kitchen.

Spectacular views from the bedrooms.

Another key feature of this quality, thoughtfully designed home, says Jacqui, is that the primary bedroom suite has great privacy, located in the north west wing, while the other bedrooms are at the other end of the house.

This house also has an office so it could be a place the new owners could work from all year round.

The current owner has her own pottery studio on the property and there is a double garage with WC plus internal singe garage, so there is plenty of room for hobbyists’ boats and different toys, says Jacqui. The property also has a separate cabin which sleeps two.

The NZ Sotheby’s agent says she has had enthusiastic inquiry already and, having timed the marketing of the home for close to Labour Weekend, she is expecting a number of out-of-towners to request viewings during the public holiday.

At the same time, potential buyers of this quality home might also be local retired farmers who will appreciate the rural and sea vista from the property, she says.

“They can get a sense of space with all the views. And you are sitting up there above the boat ramp so you get to see all the on-water activity,” says Jacqui.

Whales and dolphins are often spotted in Māhia, notes the Hawke’s Bay agent.

“The sale of this Māhia home is an extraordinary opportunity for someone who appreciates this special part of the world,” says Jacqui, who is happy to supply more details.
