"Home to me means family, a safe space, and a place to call home, not just a house."
AI summary
Fashion designer Caitlin Crisp shares a tour of her sunny Ellerslie home, a hard-earned first property she describes as “cozy and welcoming.” Her proudest achievement was buying the house, followed by a successful DIY nursery project.
The home’s clever layout is perfect for entertaining, creating a “grandstand” for watching rugby. Caitlin loves the “underrated” Ellerslie area for its convenience and lifestyle, considering the property their current dream home that ticks all the boxes for their young family.
For Caitlin Crisp, her Ellerslie property is a hard-earned milestone. Describing her home’s style as "cozy, welcoming, and sunny", Caitlin and her husband Andrew have created a warm, functional hub for their young family.
"Home to me means family, a safe space, and a place to call home, not just a house," Caitlin shares.
A hard-earned first home
Buying a property in Auckland is notoriously challenging, and for Caitlin, simply securing the home remains her proudest achievement.
"What I’m most proud of in our home is the home itself - how hard we worked to get it," she says.
Caitlin fondly recalls the day they finally took possession. "Coming in when there was no furniture, we had the biggest smiles on our faces. We even stopped a random person walking down the street to get our first photo in front of the house."
The home is lovingly scattered with fond memories.
Since that day, the home has played host to several major life milestones, none bigger than welcoming son Charlie which coincides with their biggest DIY victory.
Creating Charlie’s bedroom, which Caitlin now describes as her "dream nursery" didn't come without its challenges. "Particularly the wallpaper - it is not easy putting up wallpaper yourself," she laughs. "The wallpaper in Charlie's room is gingham, so it's striped, and to match that up is such a headache, but we managed to execute that really well."

When it comes to furnishing the spaces, Caitlin proves that a good eye can uncover incredible bargains. Her first, and perhaps best, purchase for the home was a solid marble coffee table. "It was originally listed for $150, and my husband managed to get it for like $50. It was an absolute steal."
The marble coffee table was a brilliant second hand find.
The ultimate entertaining "grandstand"
Despite not having a massive floor plan, the home punches well above its weight when it comes to hospitality. "We love entertaining in this house," Caitlin says. "It’s not a huge house, but we can host so many people."
Clever use of space, including a beloved window seat and perfectly arranged couches, creates what Caitlin describes as "a bit of a grandstand for rugby games." In the summer, the outdoor areas open up to accommodate large gatherings for special occasions.
That same window seat also serves a sweeter, daily purpose. "I love our window seat. It’s really special; I hold Charlie up when Andrew is coming home, and I feel like he recognizes his truck now."
The window seat in the lounge is a family favourite spot.
Daily rituals
Life with a young baby means adapting the daily routine. With Charlie currently going through a tricky sleep phase, mornings begin gently. "My husband usually does the morning shift and brings me a coffee or hot chocolate in bed," Caitlin says.
The dining area is where the family winds down.
Evenings, however, are a time to reconnect. The couple’s favourite way to end the day is sitting at the dining table, debriefing over dinner while Charlie jumps away nearby in his Jolly Jumper.
An underrated urban oasis
Location is everything, and for this family, Ellerslie has proven to be the ultimate neighbourhood. "I just think this area is so underrated, and we couldn't rate it more highly," Caitlin said.
Being a stone’s throw from a Pilates studio, great shops and parks allows the home to function as a true retreat. "Whether I need to sweat it out or rest it out on the comfy couch, those options are right in front of me."

When asked what her dream home looks like, Caitlin's answer is immediate. "For where we’re at at the moment, this is our dream home.
“It ticks all of our boxes... it needs garage space, off-street carparking, I need wardrobe space - and every room in this house has got a wardrobe. It's beautiful and sunny and just the right size for us.”
“I'm living in my dream home."
