Parallel imports on Trade Me

Parallel imports bring healthy competition and provide variety in the range of goods available.

By Trust and Safety 11 February 2021

Thanks to parallel importing, consumers can buy products from a wider range of outlets and for a more reasonable price.

Parallel importing is legal in Aotearoa and many sellers, including members on Trade Me, are doing it.

What are parallel products?

Parallel imported goods are authentic, genuine products.

They’re affordable because they’re sourced directly through legitimate supply chains overseas. They aren’t subject to local licensees or agents, so are often competitively priced compared to local shops or retailers.

What to be aware of when buying a parallel import

Parallel imported products may be designed for exclusive use in overseas markets, for example, cell phones may be locked, electrical goods may not be compliant with our electrical safety standards or have user manuals that aren’t in English.

When you purchase a parallel import, there might be limited after sales support compared to a local product. In New Zealand, your rights are still protected

In-trade sellers on Trade Me have obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act. If you're concerned about a product, make sure you understand your rights as a consumer.

As a buyer, it’s best to ask the questions about the item. If you’re not sure, don’t buy.
