If you’re the type of person who likes to work with your hands, and see real results from your effort, a Trade Assistant job could be a great career option.

Whether you’re fresh out of school, changing careers, or testing the waters before diving into a full trade qualification, this role is a great entry point into New Zealand’s trades sector.

What does a Trade Assistant do?

Think of a Trade Assistant as the right-hand helper to skilled tradies across a bunch of different industries. You’ll be supporting the pros, builders, plumbers, electricians, mechanics, and more, with day-to-day tasks to keep things running smoothly.

Common tasks include:

  • Setting up worksites and prepping materials

  • Handling tools and equipment

  • Assisting with basic installations or repairs

  • Keeping the site tidy and safe

  • Following health and safety procedures

No formal qualification? No problem. Most employers provide on-the-job training, and there are plenty of chances to work your way up or even start an apprenticeship.

If you don't mind a bit of hard work a trade assistant job could be perfect for you.

Where can you work?

Trade Assistants are in demand across a range of industries, and with New Zealand’s ongoing infrastructure growth, the need isn’t slowing down any time soon.

Here are a few sectors hiring Trade Assistants:

From residential builds to large-scale commercial projects, there’s always work going for extra sets of hands on site.

Plumbers and sparkies often rely on assistants to help install fixtures, run cables, or prep pipework.

Work in a factory or workshop setting helping to assemble products, operate machines, or manage maintenance tasks.

Got an interest in cars or heavy machinery? Workshops and depots regularly take on trade assistants to help with services and repairs.

What skills do you need?

You don’t need a long list of qualifications, but a good attitude and some practical skills will go a long way. Employers typically look for:

  • A bit of know-how with tools

  • Physical fitness (some heavy lifting might be involved)

  • A Site Safe Certificate (especially for construction work)

  • A restricted or full driver’s licence

  • Good communication and teamwork

  • A strong work ethic and willingness to learn

Bonus: Some employers offer apprenticeships or formal training opportunities once you’ve got your foot in the door.

Trade assistants can work in many different settings.

What can you earn?

Pay rates vary depending on the industry and your experience, but most Trade Assistants in New Zealand earn between $23.50 and $30 per hour. Not bad for a role with low entry barriers and plenty of career potential.

With time, you could move into an apprenticeship and work toward becoming fully qualified in your chosen trade, like plumbing, carpentry, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
