Makorori Beach home with views and oodles of charm

From the moment you glimpse this beachfront Gisborne home, you can see it’s a bit special.

This tastefully refurbished property at 6 Makorori Beach Road, Gisborne is testament to what you can do to a 1970s Lockwood with excellent bones. The house has been updated by the current owners when they bought it four years ago during the Covid pandemic.

They bought the beachfront property, on over 960 sqm of land, for $1.65 million, and they’ve since added huge value with extensive renovations inside and out. “We did quite a lot of internal work to open up the flow inside the home so there was more open plan living up front,” says owner, Kim Ellett. “And the views through the home out to sea are now seamless due to newly installed glass balustrades.”

The Makorori Beach home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms in the main house and out the back there’s a large renovated sleepout.

“The sleepout is roomy, has a modern bathroom and lots of storage,” he says. It’s ideal for guests or grown-up kids, or could be used as a home office or studio by the new owner.

The Elletts were helped with their kitchen design, bathroom, interior and lighting choices by friend and well known Auckland interior designer, Nicola Manning. The kitchen which used to be a tiny galley kitchen had a wall taken out and was remodelled by Gemini Kitchens. At the same time the small laundry was transformed into a scullery/laundry with generous storage. Handily, the builder who worked on the renovation, is a Makorori Beach neighbour, Henri Campbell of Campbell Built.

The owners also rebuilt the hardwood decking, in the front and at the rear. A large area at the back of the property has been concreted, offering a handy turn round area for cars or boat storage. There’s also lots of garage space, ideal for parking cars or boats and for keeping fishing and beach gear.

This house can either be a holiday house or a permanent home, it’s air-conditioned and good for all seasons, say the Elletts. The beach location is just 12 to 14 minutes from Gisborne town and nearby Wainui Beach is where the closest dairy and fish ‘n chips are. It also has a popular primary school, Wainui School.

There’s friendly rivalry between Wainui Beach and Makorori Beach, which are seen as twin beaches in the area. Ellett says he prefers Makorori Beach for its firmer sand. He also thinks it’s safer and more family-friendly.

“It’s a lovely beach community with only 50 plus houses. And in summer the Tatapouri Bay cafe is just over the hill for breakfast and yoga on the beach,” adds agent, Bronwyn Kay from The Agency.

Kay has this attractive home priced at $1.875 million.
