Check if you're ready for pet ownership
If you’ve been browsing Pets & Animal listings on Trade Me, ask these questions to get ready for pet ownership.
By Trust and Safety 26 November 2024We’ve teamed up with the SPCA, Dogs New Zealand, New Zealand Cat Fancy and the New Zealand Veterinary Association to make a list of questions to ask yourself before getting a pet.
1. Can you care for a pet for its whole life?
The average lifespan of dogs and cats is around 12 years, with some living up to 20 years. Think about what your life will look like in that time and if you can continue to care for your pet long term.
2. Can you afford a pet?
According to a 2024 NZ Companion Animal Council survey, 25% of pet owners said they struggled to meet their pet’s needs because of the current high cost of living. Pets can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars a year with expenses like microchipping, food, shelter, daycare, vet bills, and toys all adding up.
3. Do you know how to care for a pet?
Use resources from the SPCA to learn about all kinds of pet care. They have specific guides about responsible cat ownership and keeping your dog healthy.
4. Do you have time to care for a pet?
Your pet will rely on your company and depend on you for exercise, playtime, socialisation and training. Consider your working hours, social life, and how often you’re away from home when deciding if you’re ready to have a pet.
5. Is your home suitable for a pet?
While some animals need an outdoor area to run around, there are other things to keep in mind when introducing an animal to your home. Cats may investigate cupboards, sheds and garages and accidentally be shut in. Dogs may find wires and chew them.

6. Is the pet you’re buying healthy?
To comply with Trade Me’s Code of Animal Welfare, an animal must be seen by a vet once they reach 6 weeks old. Request a vet report prior to purchasing your new pet and check the animal has had the correct checks and vaccines for their age.
We would like to thank the SPCA, NZVA, Dogs New Zealand and New Zealand Cat Fancy for their input into this initiative.
These organisations have further information on pet care and ownership. We recommend both sellers and buyers use the resources they have available.
