Renovate or build and you’ll quickly discover how difficult interior design is. There are a thousand little choices to make, millions of colour options, thousands of tiles to choose from and hundreds of taps.

You need a trained, talented eye to get it right - like one of the 11 interior designers in Christchurch (based on Google reviews).

1. Armstrong interiors - 5.0 / 13 reviews

Armstrong interiors are an award winning studio, headed by the talented Angelique Armstrong. They offer a turnkey interior design service for both renovations and newbuilds, focusing mainly on higher end renovations. And their work is incredible - they’ve recently won Tida New Zealand renovation of the year, and have a shelf full of awards at their studio.

2. Comber and Comber interiors - 4.9 / 26 reviews

Comber and Comber do a little bit of everything - 3D home tours, window treatments, and home staging, but their core business is interior design. They’ve got more reviews than any other interior designer in Christchurch, and they’re all glowing. Check out the Rossendale home on their projects page to get an idea of their style.

3. Anna Margaret Interiors 5.0 / 8 reviews

Anna Margaret started her career in accounting and finance, then switched to interior design, and with the help of a small team has built one of the city’s best reviewed interior design studios. Their philosophy is all about blending elegance with everyday practicality, and their services run from selecting soft furnishings, to colour consultation, joinery design, and full turnkey.

4. Interior Style - 5.0 / 7 reviews

Claire at Interior Style’s projects have a more youthful look than the other designers in the top four, and her reviews are stellar. One even called working with Claire, ‘life changing’, and many mention the 3D plans she provides to help visualise a space.

5. Lily + Forbes Interior Design - 5.0 / 7 reviews

Lily + Forbes is an interior design studio co-founded by Andrea Marshall and Siobhan Nolan (side note - who is Lily + Forbes?). They focus on understanding their clients’ lifestyle and personality, then creating a space that suits - and guiding people to make informed decisions.

Take your interior to the next level.

6. Lisa Hurley Design - 5.0 / 6 reviews

Lisa Hurley Design is a small design studio headed by (guess who) Lisa Hurley. Their small team provides interior design support from ideation, to project completion, whether you just want help with colours, or a full fitout service. They’ve got some brilliant reviews, including one on their website who’s worked with Lisa for 23 years over several projects.

7. Emma Wallace Interior Design 5.0 / 6 reviews

Unlike all of the interior designers on this list, Emma is a licensed building practitioner and qualified interior architect. That explains why she does a lot of work in renovating and extending older homes, which require creative design and some building knowledge to keep costs down and ensure extensions are sympathetic to older sections.

How should I choose an interior designer?

Reviews are helpful, sure. But the most important thing to consider when choosing an interior designer is whether or not you like the work in their portfolio. Any decent designer will make choices to suit you, but they inevitably do have a certain style that carries through all of their projects. If you don’t like that style, or their work doesn’t resonate with you they’re not the right designer for you.

It's almost as important to simply like and trust your designer. You’ll be working with them to make hundreds or thousands of decisions, and this may at times be stressful - so it’s always best to get along with them. Last of all, word of mouth is great for choosing an interior designer (as not all designers have Google reviews). If someone you know has recently renovated or built, ask if they used a designer if you like the look of their place.
