Life in One Tree Hill

Not every Auckland suburb has a song named after it, even if the circumstances surrounding One Tree Hill’s immortalisation by U2 are tragic in nature. The song, One Tree Hill, was written by Bono Vox following the passing of his friend, and band roadie, Greg Caroll, a Kiwi. On Bono’s first night in New Zealand, Caroll took him up One Tree Hill as an introduction to Auckland, and Vox penned the song as a tribute to Carroll.

Today, One Tree Hill remains a popular choice due to its centrality, excellent transport links and green spaces. Among its highlights are:

  • Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill): the volcanic peak from which the suburb takes its name towers 182 metres above sea level. It’s a popular spot for walkers, joggers and cyclists, and also offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape.
  • Cornwall Park: adjoining One Tree Hill Domain is Cornwall Park, one of the largest green spaces within central Auckland. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic on a summer’s day, and in spring kids will love seeing the new-born lambs and calves that live in the park.
  • Stardome Observatory & Planetarium: okay, technically this is in Epsom, but it lies within One Tree Hill Domain, so we reckon the suburb has a very strong claim. This public public astronomical observatory is a great place to bring the kids to learn about the wonders of space.

One Tree Hill domain is a great place to bring kids.
