What’s it like to live in One Tree Hill?

This time, we’re exploring the leafy, tranquil suburb of One Tree Hill.

Life in One Tree Hill
Not every Auckland suburb has a song named after it, even if the circumstances surrounding One Tree Hill’s immortalisation by U2 are tragic in nature. The song, One Tree Hill, was written by Bono Vox following the passing of his friend, and band roadie, Greg Caroll, a Kiwi. On Bono’s first night in New Zealand, Caroll took him up One Tree Hill as an introduction to Auckland, and Vox penned the song as a tribute to Carroll.
Today, One Tree Hill remains a popular choice due to its centrality, excellent transport links and green spaces. Among its highlights are:
- Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill): the volcanic peak from which the suburb takes its name towers 182 metres above sea level. It’s a popular spot for walkers, joggers and cyclists, and also offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape.
- Cornwall Park: adjoining One Tree Hill Domain is Cornwall Park, one of the largest green spaces within central Auckland. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic on a summer’s day, and in spring kids will love seeing the new-born lambs and calves that live in the park.
- Stardome Observatory & Planetarium: okay, technically this is in Epsom, but it lies within One Tree Hill Domain, so we reckon the suburb has a very strong claim. This public public astronomical observatory is a great place to bring the kids to learn about the wonders of space.

Getting around
One Tree Hill is very well connected The suburb is well served with buses into the CBD, as well as to other centres and surrounding suburbs.
One Tree Hill’s proximity to State Highway One also makes it easy to get north or south for weekend’s away, or for those commuting by car to work.

For parents of school-aged kids, there are a number of options when it comes to education:
- One Tree Hill College: 421-451 Great South Rd.
- Oranga School: 21 Rangipawa Rd
- Ellerslie School: 12 Kalmia St.
