What's it like to live in Onehunga?

Life in Onehunga
In Auckland, you can’t get much more central than Onehunga. With the Mangere Bridge to the south and One Tree Hill to the north, this well connected, multicultural suburb has become an increasingly sought after location for the city’s homebuyers. Here are a few reasons why:
- Taumanu Reserve: recent council developments have given Onehunga residents a much improved waterfront to enjoy. The waterside paths are popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists, and is the perfect antidote for those seeking to escape to a less urban environment.
- Te Tauranga Lake: across SH20 from the Taumanu Reserve is New Zealand’s first cable-towed wakeboarding park, complete with rails and jumps. A firm favourite among local adrenaline junkies.
- Jellicoe Park: at over 100 years old, visiting Jellicoe Park is like stepping back in time. From picturesque pine trees to children’s play areas to the historic Fencibles Cottages, Jellicoe Park has something for everyone.
- Restaurants: Onehunga is a cultural melting pot, meaning you can satisfy just about any culinary craving you may have. If you’re looking for lots of options in one place, Onehunga Mall is a great place to peruse.
Getting around
One of the reasons Onehunga has seen increasing interest from house hunters in recent times is the fact that it’s so well connected. With SH20 on its doorstep, car and bus commuters can reach the major employment hubs of Auckland CBD and Manukau with ease.
Onehunga railway station offers an alternative to those wanting to pass on the rush hour traffic, or those without a car. On the Onehunga line, you’re six stops away from Newmarket, and seven from Britomart.

There are a good range of schools for children of all ages in and around Onehunga. These include:
